POTABLE AQUA
CHLORINE DIOXIDE TABLETS

Buck Tilton, MS - Guest Contributor

Potable AquaŽ has been around long enough for the name to fall easily from the lips of just about anyone who has disinfected water in the backcountry. You remember the iodine taste and the fact that your water bottle slowly acquired a disturbing orange tinge. But both those unpleasant aspects of water disinfection are no longer required for a safe drink. You can, indeed, suck down even safer water. Say howdy to Potable AquaŽ Chlorine Dioxide tablets.

Chlorine dioxide does its job extremely well, killing viruses, bacteria, and protozoa including Giardia and Cryptosporidium-and that last critter, as you may know, is not deactivated by iodine. And chlorine dioxide leaves water untainted with a chemical taste (or smell), and your bottle untainted by a stain.

Despite the word "chlorine," chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a different chemical, a gas, in fact, that doesn't even exist in nature. It got invented. ClO2 doesn't exist in the tablets either. Each tablet contains sodium chlorite-deemed safe by the FDA-that turns into the gas when you drop a tablet into water. With chlorine you end up with pathogens (disease-causing germs) that are chlorinated to death. With chlorine dioxide the pathogens are oxidized, sort of rusted to death-a safe and effective process.

Highly unstable, the tablets are sealed in tough foil that will keep them active for up to two years. So tough is the foil, you'll probably have to cut out the tablets instead of tear them out. PAŽ Chlorine Dioxide is available in 20-tablet packs and 30-tablet packs.

A half hour after the plop in the bottle, everything that can make you sick will be dead-except Crypto. You'll have to wait four hours for those hardy cysts to die, and that, of course, is one of the negatives, especially if you're thirsty and didn't think ahead. Another downside for the impecunious: chlorine dioxide costs more than iodine.

On the other hydrated hand you'll be carrying a very light, completely safe means to disinfect water that meets EPA microbiological water purifier and test standards.
