Thin, strong and lightweight, there are literally hundreds of practical uses for 550 cord. Known as Mil-C-5040 Type 3 in military lingo, this small versatile rope was originally developed for use in parachutes and is also referred to as paracord. Genuine 550 cord has a tensile strength of 550 pounds (hence the name) and is composed of seven individual nylon strands encased within a braided nylon outer sheath. One of the key advantages of 550 cord is the ability to remove the inner strands for individual use.
Experienced outdoorsmen always travel with a length of paracord. With it, you can improvise shelter, replace a bootlace, secure gear, hang a bear bag, dry clothing, make a lanyard, and fish in addition to countless other uses. LifeView Outdoors only sells genuine Mil-C-5040 Type 3, 550 cord from the same mill that supplies the government. Our 550 cord is manufactured to military specifications, not to commercial specifications which tend to be less rigorous. Each spool arrives in our shop with a mil-spec certificate of compliance. Why Mil-Spec 550 Paracord?
What are the differences between mil-spec and commercial 550 cord? Actually, there’s more than you may think. It all starts with the nylon yarn. Mil-spec 550 cord uses the highest grade of specialized nylon fiber for their yarn. This yarn is of a specific denier and is heat-treated to ensure consistent performance and controlled stretch. The yarn is twisted into strands and seven of these strands form the inner core of Type III 550 cord.
The outer sheath is also made with these high-grade nylon yarns specifically oriented before the braiding process. The precise braid pattern is designed to offer resistance to both abrasion and snags while providing maximum strength, flexibility and durability.
When the braiding process is complete, tests are performed to confirm breaking strength, elongation, weight to length ratios and color consistency among other attributes. Successful testing certifies the run as mil-spec.
Properly constructed mil-spec paracord creates a final product in which all of the components work together as a complete unit. The result is a balanced, efficient product with predictable long-term performance. The official name is Mil-C-5040 Type III Nylon Cord.
There are many varieties of commercial “paracord”. Commercial versions do not have to meet any of the testing or manufacturing standards of mil-spec paracord and are often less reliable, especially when under stress.
